Paediatric Liaison Child and Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist, Cork

We are looking for a Child and Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist to work with Paediatric Liaison psychiatry in a great hospital location in Ireland.

The post provides clinical leadership in the delivery of a Hospital Liaison Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) delivered by a multidisciplinary team.

The Consultant oversees assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic interventions for young people aged 0–18 years across a variety of clinical settings, including general hospitals, paediatric wards, and emergency departments.

The role includes managing both acute presentations (e.g., self‑harm, overdose, psychosis, trauma) and chronic or comorbid conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety, treatment adherence, somatic symptoms).

Key Responsibilities 1. Clinical Duties

Provide Consultant‑level psychiatric care for children and adolescents in liaison settings.

Lead multidisciplinary assessment and intervention across hospital and community interfaces.

Deliver consultation services for emergency and acute presentations.

Ensure appropriate referral pathways to community teams or specialist inpatient units.

Supervise clinical care, diagnostic work, and treatment plans for patients under the team's remit.

Provide clinical leadership for risk assessment, crisis management, and safety planning.

Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure compliance with statutory and governance requirements.

Provide consultation to other medical professionals on request.

Ensure safe prescribing practices and oversight of medication management.

Lead and support a multidisciplinary mental health team, which may include clinical nurse specialists, social workers, psychologists, and trainees.

Provide training, supervision, and mentorship for junior medical staff and other disciplines.

Promote high standards of professional development and clinical practice within the team.

Participate in recruitment, selection, and evaluation processes for staff as required.

Foster effective liaison with community services, primary care, and other agencies.

3. Governance, Quality&Risk Management

Participate in clinical governance, quality assurance, and service improvement initiatives.

Engage in clinical audit, incident review, and risk‑management activities.

Contribute to service planning, development, and evaluation.

Ensure compliance with all clinical, legal, and organisational policies.

Participate in research activities relevant to child and adolescent mental health.

4. Administrative&Organisational Duties

Participate in management structures, service planning meetings, and strategic working groups.

Provide appropriate reports, documentation, and communication to relevant professionals and agencies.

Participate in on‑call rotas where required.

Allocate time for teaching, professional development, administrative duties, and multidisciplinary meetings.

Eligibility Criteria Qualifications

Eligible/registered as a

Specialist in Child&Adolescent Psychiatry

(or equivalent) with the Irish Medical Council

Experience

Experience in

liaison child and adolescent psychiatry

is desirable.

Demonstrated experience working within multidisciplinary mental health teams.

Competence in assessment and management of complex child and adolescent mental health presentations.
