Summary of Post
The Genome of Europe is a collaborative, multinational initiative aimed at creating a high-quality, large-scale reference dataset representing the genetic diversity of European populations. The goal is to generate, assemble and make available for research use, harmonised, high-coverage genomic data that can be securely analysed across countries. As part of this effort, participating nations contribute population-scale cohorts, associated sequencing and metadata, under common ethical, technical, and data‑governance standards. The Genome of Ireland is Ireland’s national contribution to this initiative. It aims to generate a representative genomic dataset of the Irish population, capturing unique genetic characteristics that can inform disease research, diagnostics, and precision health initiatives. The project includes participant recruitment, sequencing, data processing, and integration with European datasets through the European Commission Genomic Data Infrastructure programme. Together, the Genome of Europe and Genome of Ireland strengthen Ireland’s role in European genomics while enabling meaningful scientific and clinical insights at national and continental levels.
The Genome of Ireland (GoI) project is jointly funded by the Irish Health Research Board (HRB) and the European Commission as part of the wider Genome of Europe (GOE) project. Genome of Ireland is recruiting at least 1,200 participants to develop a DNA reference pool of the genetic variation of people living on the island of Ireland today. We will sequence the full genomes of these participants, to better understand similarities and differences at the level of our DNA, thereby providing a comprehensive picture of the genetic variation on the island today. To complement these data, participants will be invited to provide basic health information, demographic information such as age, sex, and ancestral birth locations of parents and grandparents if known. These data will be collected through a secure web application called RedCap which is designed to store participant annotation data. Paired together with whole-genome data, this will allow the Genome of Ireland to achieve its goals in providing a reference cohort for future research in a way that is compatible with 100,000 similar participants across Europe.
The post of research nurse will cover the recruitment of participants to the Genome of Ireland project, the collection of data, and shipping of biological samples to the RCSI biobank. In general, this post will be expected to manage the data of potential participants registering their interest in the study, identifying and organising recruitment venues across the island of Ireland, carrying out recruitment, in‑person data collection and consenting alongside whole‑blood sampling for DNA, processing of recruitment data and samples to central data repositories and biobanks.
Specifically, the duties of the post are:
Manage the data of potential participants registering their interest in participating and identify their availability for recruitment when recruiting in their area
Identify suitable locations for in-person recruitment with the help of the wider recruitment work package team
Contact registered participants and invite them to a recruitment centre and carry out informed consent and blood draws for a DNA sample
Manage data collection on recruitment and uploading of that data to a central Genome of Ireland participant database
The shipping of biological samples to the RCSI Biobank Service in Dublin
Positively represent RCSI and all funding stakeholders and collaborators at all times
Uphold and follow all health and safety standards and procedures as required
Carry out administrative duties as required
Complete training as required
Related tasks and duties as required
Qualifications– (Essential):
Nursing degree or similar/equivalent
Knowledge&Experience– (Essential):
Phlebotomy training and experience
Valid Irish driving licence and a car
Previous experience in a research environment, including the recruitment of individuals to a research study
Previous experience as a research nurse
Experience of counselling in the setting of genetics
Experience working in a research genomics environment
Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of independence
Strong communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team
We are all too aware that imposter syndrome and the confidence gap can sometimes stop fantastic candidates putting themselves forward, so please do submit an application— we’d love to hear from you.
