Details of Service

Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) is a 150 bedded tertiary referral centre for Maternity, Neonatology and Gynaecology located on the campus of Cork University Hospital. CUMH incorporates the Obstetric, Gynaecology, Paediatric and Neonatology Services in the Cork University Hospital Group within the Health Service Executive South West region. CUMH has approximately 7,000 births per annum and is a tertiary referral centre. Services at CUMH are delivered within the HSE South West Region which is based on the principles of partnership and integration and strongly supports the involvement of the multidisciplinary team in service provision.CUMH is the site for clinical placements for student midwives and student nurses in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes delivered in partnership with University College Cork. CUMH Services incorporate the use of the MN-CMS (Maternal Newborn Clinical Management System) into care delivered at CUMH. The group’s primary academic partner is University College Cork (UCC). A wide range of educational programmes and research is conducted within all hospitals in the Group.Education and Partnerships

CUMH is the clinical site for undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery education programmes delivered in partnership with the School of Nursing and Midwifery at University College Cork Clinical placements for students extend to other outreach facilities and Health Service Providers in the Cork regionIsWIN (Ireland South Women&Infants Network) supports established clinical pathways and academic links with partner hospitals The HSE South West Region includes six Health Regions and aligns with regional structures to deliver health and social care services Centre of Midwifery Education (CME)

The Centre is responsible for provision of a broad range of quality assured education, training and professional development programmes for registered nurses and midwives to support maintenance of competence and safe, quality patient care. It also provides programmes for support staff involved in nursing and midwifery support and other staff as relevant. Programme provision is based on service need and HSE objectives. The Centre has a geographical remit for County Cork but may incorporate Maternity Services in the HSE Southwest Region. The Centre is part of the National Office of the Nursing&Midwifery Services Director, in the Clinical Strategy and Programmes function in the HSE. Aims&Objectives of the CME

Provision of education and programmes of professional development across all Divisions of Nursing&Midwifery Identification of education, training and development needs to support Nursing/Midwifery care, in partnership with Directors of Nursing and Midwifery, Planning and Development Provision of a comprehensive training and development programme aligned to annual objectives and organisational prioritiesEnsuring training aligns to national initiatives and organisational objectives Maintaining liaison between higher education institutions and health service agencies Promoting cross-divisional and interagency educational practices Promoting professional development of staff as integral to nursing/midwifery resource managementSourcing and evaluating internal and external education and training providers Establishing and maintaining systems to record education, training and development activities Evaluation of education, training and development activities Encouraging and supporting the research agenda at local and national levelEnsuring that education, training and development activities are evidence based Purpose of the Post

To assist the Director of the CME in planning, development and delivery of practice-based education and development programmes for nurses, midwives and health care assistants The role involves the planning, budgeting, coordinating, implementing and evaluation of a range of educational initiatives across the CME’s remit with regard to Midwifery and Nursing services. Education should be based on relevant and up to date research and provide a collaborative learning environment to encourage reflection and innovation.Informal Enquiries
