Time Commitment

Board meetings: 4 meetings per year (online or hybrid, typically 5.30pm–7pm).

Annual Planning Day: One in-person meeting per year (in Dublin), typically on a Saturday (approx. 4 hours)

Annual General Meeting (typically in-person or hybrid, 5.30pm–7pm).

Finance&Funding Subcommittee meetings: approx. 4 meetings per year (online).

Term of Appointment Board members are typically appointed for a fixed 3-year term in line with Afri’s governance procedures, with the possibility of renewal.

About the Organisation Afri is a values-driven organisation that promotes peace, justice, human rights, and sustainability. Afri seeks to inform debate, influence policy and practice and effect change in Ireland and internationally on these issues, guided by the primary goal of the UN Charter:“to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.”

Afri is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors and supported by a small staff team.

Role Overview Afri is seeking a Treasurer/Finance Board Member to join its voluntary Board of Directors and to chair the Board’s Finance&Funding Subcommittee.

The Treasurer plays a key governance role in supporting the Board to ensure strong financial oversight, transparency, and long-term financial sustainability.

The Treasurer will work closely with the Coordinator, Finance&Compliance Officer, Board Chair and Finance&Funding Subcommittee to support Afri’s financial sustainability and compliance, helping to safeguard the organisation’s long-term resilience and impact.

Key Responsibilities Financial Oversight

Provide oversight of Afri’s financial health.

Review and present financial reports to the Board.

Support the development and monitoring of annual budgets and financial forecasts.

Ensure financial reporting complies with relevant legislation and standards, including the Charities Act, the Companies Act, the Charities Governance Code and Charities SORP (FRS 102).

Ensure appropriate financial controls and systems are in place.

Support oversight of financial policies, internal controls and risk management processes.

Subcommittee Leadership

Chair the Finance&Funding Subcommittee.

Ensure the subcommittee meets regularly, agrees and mobilises priority finance&funding related actions, and reports to the Board

Support the preparation of financial reports, audit processes and regulatory filings.

Strategic Financial Planning

Contribute financial insight to Afri’s strategic planning.

Support the development of long-term financial projections and reserves planning.

Help assess the financial implications of new projects or initiatives.

Funding and Resource Development

Contribute to the development and oversight of Afri’s funding strategy.

Support the identification of new funding opportunities, including grants, institutional funding and partnerships.

Provide oversight of grant management and financial reporting to funders

What the Treasurer is Not Responsible For

Day-to-day bookkeeping or financial administration.

Operational financial decision-making (which rests with the Coordinator within delegated authority).

Direct management of staff.

A professional background in finance, accounting, audit, risk or related fields

An understanding of financial governance in the Irish charity or not-for-profit sector (desirable)

Experience reading and interpreting management accounts and financial statements

An appreciation of good governance and fiduciary duties

A commitment to social justice, global citizenship and equality
