Role Title: Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist: Burns Job Reference Number: 002411 Closing Date:Sunday, 14th June 2026 Purpose of the Role: To provide a comprehensive Speech and Language Therapy
service to the National Burns Unit, St Jamess Hospital. To provide a comprehensive Speech and Language service to inpatients and outpatients with burn injuries under the care of the National Burns Unit, St Jamess Hospital and related areas. Provide specialist assessment and management of burns patients including dysphagia, communication, voice and airway disorders. To work closely with Consultant Surgeons, intensivists, medical teams, nursing, SCOPe HSCPs and multidisciplinary colleagues, participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and liaise with all members of staff to ensure that patients/clients are provided with the best possible Speech and Language service within resources available. To establish and maintain high standards of evidence-based Speech and Language practice in burns care. To train and up-skill students, Staff Grade and Senior Speech and Language Therapists in all aspects of the swallow, communication and tracheostomy management of burns, including critically-ill patients with major burn injuries, and participate in Speech and Language education programmes for health care staff. To develop policies, standard operating procedures, clinical guidelines and care pathways for the Speech and Language management of burns patients, disseminate and implement these in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues. To participate in service planning and evaluation, report on activity and ensure effective use of resources through continuous improvement, efficiency and quality management. Be aware of national policy, guidelines and consultations and, in conjunction with the Speech and Language Therapy Managers, participate in strategic planning and development of the Speech and Language service in St Jamess Hospital. To act as a clinical advisor to colleagues, students and other health professionals providing clinical expertise on a regional and national basis on the Speech and Language management of burns patients. To maintain and develop high standards of clinical practice and knowledge and actively participate in research and audit in this speciality. To disseminate specialist knowledge and evidence-based practice through presentations and publications. To optimise the use of available resources to achieve effective outcomes when planning and delivering a flexible service that meets the needs of all patients. To ensure that a high-quality patient centred service is based on the best available evidence. To develop and implement service/business plans, quality initiatives, audits etc. and report on outcomes in collaboration with the line manager. To develop and update clinical guidelines for own areas of practice in accordance with evidence and professional body guidelines. To plan, deliver and evaluate education, training and health promotion activities as appropriate. Maintain professional networks with other clinical specialists, IASLT, education providers, special interest groups etc. to exchange and enhance knowledge base. Provide professional supervision in accordance with the SLT Departmental policy and participate in own professional supervision with SLT Managers. To provide support for other staff including mentoring, coaching and formal development training as appropriate. Participate and cooperate with legislative and regulatory requirements in relation to Health and Safety as outlined in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Hospital Safety Statement. Ensure own mandatory learning and training is kept up to date. Required: Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc Candidates for appointment must: i.Be registered as a Speech and Language Therapist by the Speech and Language Therapists Registration Board at CORU. And 5 years full time (or equivalent) years post qualification clinical experience of which 4 years full time (or equivalent) must be consecutive in the required area of Burns and/or Critical Care/Tracheostomy management. And must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability, management, leadership and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office And a proven record of clinical excellence in the specialism. And v.All candidates must demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development relevant to the required area of specialism, in the form of post-graduate qualifications or relevant courses. And must demonstrate achievement in the areas of clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, practice development, teaching and research. And proof of Statutory Registration on the Speech and Language Therapist Register maintained by the Speech and Language Therapists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued. Annual Registration On appointment practitioners must maintain annual registration on the Speech and Language Therapists Register maintained by the Speech and Language Therapists Registration Board at CORU And Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC) And Clinical proficiency in assessing and managing patients with communication, airway and swallowing disorders in an ICU/Burns setting, including tracheostomy management and management of ventilated patients. Competency in the use of instrumental assessments including Videofluoroscopy and FEES for patients presenting with dysphagia. Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development relevant to working with patients with Burns. Desired: Evidence of experience in service delivery, planning and development.
