Overview The Irish Advocacy Network CLG (trading as Peer Advocacy in Mental Health) is an all‑Ireland independent mental health organisation led by people with personal experience of mental health challenges. Our services promote recovery by offering peer advocacy, information and support to clients, enabling people experiencing challenges to self‑advocate, speak up, and take back control of their lives.

The Role Peer Advocacy in Mental Health is seeking a board member with HR expertise.

Responsibilities

Advise and guide the board on HR matters and all aspects pertaining to HR, culture, best practice and employment.

Evaluate and monitor the adequacy of HR policies and procedures and ensure that the organisation is compliant with best practice principles.

Skills and Experience Required

Experience of developing HR strategy.

Knowledge of employment law and best practice.

Recruitment, retention, and development– insight into attracting, motivating, and developing staff.

Performance management and culture– ability to advise on policies, wellbeing, and conflict resolution.

Familiarity with the HSE and an understanding of the healthcare system in Ireland, in particular mental health services, would be an advantage.

Qualities Required

Lived experience of mental health issues, or an empathetic disposition to people living with mental health challenges is essential.

Commitment to the charity’s mission and values.

Strategic thinking, integrity and sound judgment.

Time to prepare for and attend meetings.

Ability to commit to the role for a three‑year term.

Charities Regulator’s General Duties of a Charity Board Member

Comply with the charity’s governing document.

Ensure the charity is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit.

Act in the best interest of the charity.

Act with reasonable care and skill.

Manage the assets of your charity.

Board Meetings There are 10 board meetings a year. Meetings are generally held at 11.00 am for one to two hours on a weekday, 70% take place online and 30% in person in Cork Street, Dublin 8.

Committees There are four board committees: Governance and Compliance, Risk, Strategic Planning and Policy. The successful candidate will be expected to join one of the committees, all of which meet online.
