Medical Scientist– Histology (Basic Grade) – Temporary – 12 months Location: Galway University Hospital, Division of Anatomic Pathology, Department of Histopathology, Cytopathology&Molecular Pathology.
Purpose: To participate in delivering a high quality Anatomic Pathology Laboratory service.
Responsibilities
Maintain an awareness of the primacy of the patient in all hospital activities.
Perform to the highest professional standards and implement services that support the clinical needs of patients, aligned with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the Health Service Executive.
Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the profession of Medical Science.
Implement operational processes to best‑practice standards to optimise resource use.
Liaise with other healthcare professionals as appropriate.
Take responsibility for the quality of work and carry out duties in accordance with laboratory and hospital policy.
Perform analytical testing appropriate to a histopathology laboratory.
Carry out all activities related to receipt, analysis and reporting of laboratory specimens.
Participate in quality management programmes that are patient‑centred and measure audit performance and client satisfaction.
Perform work to the highest professional standard in accordance with ISO 15189 and laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Ensure procedures comply with international and national guidelines; participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance.
Report anomalies, near misses, non‑conformances and incorrect results immediately to senior staff.
Follow all record‑keeping policies.
Observe strict confidentiality when handling patient or hospital information.
Collaborate with senior staff to introduce new ideas and methods according to HSE policy.
Co‑operate in evaluating and validating equipment, consumables and reagents.
Co‑operate in research and development projects.
Undertake any reasonable duties as requested by the Chief Medical Scientist.
Requirements
Relevant scientific qualification (BSc in Biomedical or related Science).
Member or eligible for membership of the ACSLM.
Registered with CORU or in the process of applying for state registration.
Ideally have previous experience in histology.
Up‑to‑date knowledge of best practice in delivering a quality laboratory service.
Professional approach to work.
Flexibility in work practice.
Patient‑focused approach.
Good communication, planning, organisation and teamwork skills.
