The Role Clinical Engineer– Specialist Clinical Technologist Department of Clinical Physics and Bio‑Engineering – Medical Equipment Management Medical equipment is used for medical treatment and diagnosis of patients in all areas of a hospital and beyond. Having fully functional and accurate medical equipment is essential for the safe diagnosis and treatment of patients, and it is the Medical Equipment Management service that is responsible for that equipment. The Medical Equipment Management service is a team of highly trained clinical engineer technologists who are experts on medical equipment. We work acrossten hospital sites in NHS Greater Glasgow&Clyde, managing the full life cycle of over 55,000 medical equipment devices, completing more than 60,000 jobs per year.

The opportunity You will work as part of a team of clinical engineer technologists based in Stobhill Hospital but providing a regional service to Greater Glasgow and Clyde and beyond. This will require frequent off‑site visits to repair and maintain medical equipment.

You will have a permanent contract with a working week that is Monday to Friday. Every day is different, but your primary role is to lead the reactive and planned maintenance of ambulatory palliative care syringe pumps, you could be maintaining these pumps one day, or the next day servicing a ventilator in a patient’s home, or the next day performing a repair on an operating microscope in out‑patients.

You will work with a wide range of medical devices including specialist and highly complex equipment. You will receive both manufacturer and in‑house specialist training, to develop your skills to enable you to commission, calibrate, performance assure and repair a wide range of specialist and highly complex equipment.

Location based in Stobhill Hospital

Permanent Contract

Full‑time position (36 hours per week)

Shift pattern: Monday to Friday, working 7.2 hours per day

Key Responsibilities

Commissioning of medical devices: complete acceptance checking and installation of new medical devices, including specialist and highly complex units, to ensure devices are safe for staff and patients.

Scheduled maintenance: carry out scheduled planned maintenance and quality assurance testing on medical devices, including specialist and highly complex units, in accordance with the Asset Management System.

Fault‑finding and repair: carry out fault diagnosis on a broad range of medical devices, including specialist and highly complex equipment, using a planned and systematic approach making use diagnostic aids and test equipment. When required liaising with manufacturers and agents.

Decommissioning of medical devices: decommission medical devices following standard operating procedures.

Electrical safety testing: visual inspection and electrical safety testing of equipment for compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and Electricity at Work Regulations.

Safety alerts / field safety notices: investigate, develop responses and complete jobs or actions that have been generated in response to a safety alert, safety notice, etc.

Incident investigation: lead technical equipment evaluation for medical devices involved in incidents, providing a report to the Section or Technical Manager.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job We are looking for people that are passionate about medical equipment, patient safety, engineering and helping people. People that work well in a team and have a desire to learn.

Engineering or Technology knowledge to SCQF Level 9

Postgraduate experience of medical equipment, for example attending manufacturers technical courses

Experience of the service, repair and fault finding of a wide range of medical equipment

Understanding of the clinical, scientific and engineering principles of a broad range of medical devices

Good organisational and communication skills

UK driving licence
